Game 21

- Wednesday April 23rd – Coors Field
- Cubs 7 – Rockies 6 – (10 innings)
- Record (15-6) – 1st place in the NL Central
- Record with A. Soriano on the 15-day DL (7-1)
The skinny: For some Cubs fans, the organization’s 10,000th win came in fitting fashion; an extra innings affair after blowing both an early 3-0 lead and a ninth inning lead, too.
Actually, only the New York / San Francisco Giants have won more games than the Chicago Cubs. Then again, who cares about win 10,000 when the Cubbies haven’t won a single World Series in 100 years?
Seriously, all I care about is the Cubs won a game tonight that they tried to give away on several occasions.
Now, understandably it’s hard to knock a club that’s won six-in-a-row. So, I won’t, but the Cubs had us in for a rodeo this evening in Colorado.
First, it appeared Rich Hill (5 IP, 2-R, 3-H, 4-BB and 3-K) was back to aiming the ball at home instead of just throwing it plateward like the coaches want him to do.
However, Hill’s wildness actually seemed to throw the Rockies’ hitters off for a bit. That is, until the fifth inning when Colorado started its five run rally with the help of a couple of walks from the Cubs’ left-hander.
Aiming the ball in Coors is one thing, handing out four free passes one mile above sea-level is another.
Next, in comes Michael Wuertz who inflated his ERA to 6.10 with the addition of two more earned runs against no outs recorded in the inning.
Following Wuertz, and two blown save opportunities later (Lieber, Wood), Aramis Ramirez and Ryan Theriot deliver two huge hits (Ramirez a HR and Theriot had the game-winning hit) to help earn the “W” in extra frames.
Again, this game went from pretty, to ugly, on a few different occasions. Still, it’s valuable win in the standings.
W: Wood (2-0) – S: Marmol (2)
L: Wells (1-1)
- Notes: Lou earned his 100th victory managing the Cubs. The win ties him with Ralph Houk for 14th on the all-time wins list with 1,619.
- Mark DeRosa added another talent to his already versatile resume when finished the game defensively at first base.
- Ronny Cedeno started at second base and continued his hot hitting going 2-for-3.
