Game 31

- Sunday May 4th – Busch Stadium
- Cardinals 5 – Cubs 3
- Record (18-13) – 2nd place in the NL Central
The skinny: Walks will haunt.
One man on, two outs and it’s a tie-game (2-2) in the bottom of the fourth.
Next, Cubs’ right-hander Jason Marquis walks Adam Kennedy, I cringe: here comes Phat Albert.
Sure enough, Pujols doubles down the left field line, two runners score and the Cardinals never look back. There’s your ballgame. And again, walks will haunt.
Marquis just didn’t have his best control tonight: 5-BB which, led to 5-ER in just 5.1 innings pitched. Call it a bad outing, to say the least.
Obviously, it stinks to lose the rubber-match against the Cardinals. Still, I’m more peeved that the Cubs could only muster two runs and three hits vs. Todd frigin’ Wellemeyer.
Meanwhile, Seam Gallagher (2 IP, 0-R, 1-H) pitched well in his first outing of the season. And, the young right-hander should see some more innings in the upcoming series at Cincinnati.
Also, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Aramis (swollen wrist) returns to the line-up sooner than later.
Plus, the fact Aramis sat out tonight’s game has me a little worried this injury is worse than originally thought. After all, Ramirez was expected to play this evening. However, it’s clear the Cubs already miss his presence in the batting order.
W: Wellemeyer (3-1) – Isringhausen (10)
L: Marquis (1-2)
- Notes: Second baseman Mike Fontenot (.294 avg.) has reached base in 13 of his last 17 plate appearances.
- For the 15th consecutive game the Cubs have had at least one plate appearance with the bases loaded.
