Jerome-O-Meter | Gm 26-30

Jerome Walton

Bearing down on Benito Santiago’s rookie record of 34 consecutive games with a hit, Jerome Walton’s hitting streak came to an end after 30 games.

On Monday, August 21 vs. the Reds at Wrigley Field Walton went a combined 0-for-4 against Ron Robinson, Rob Dibble & John Franco with the Cubs losing 6-5 in 10 innings.

Not surprisingly, however, Walton managed a least one hit through his next five games with an at-bat before going 0-for-4 against the Astros eight days later.

Walton’s sensational streak raised his season average from .291 to .305 during the run, and more importantly, helped pace the Cubs to a 20-10 record during the stretch.

The Cubs rallied behind Walton’s hot hitting from a 2.5 game deficit to 2.5 game lead in the NL East, and eventual division crown.

San Francisco tamed the Cubs 4-1 in the NLCS, although Walton hit .364 going 8-for-22 in the series.

Jerome was remarkably consistent at the plate throughout the regular season. Aside from three consecutive hitless games in mid April, Walton never went hitless in consecutive contests until the month of September–92 games later!

He also became the first Cubs player to win the Rookie of the Year Award in 27 years, not bad for a kid with zero Triple-A experience, and finished in 13th place for the NL MVP Award.

The unfortunate reality, however, is Walton’s rookie season was arguably his best in the big leagues.

The bright promise of his 1989 season slowly deteriorated during his next three seasons spent with the Cubs.

He next moved to the Angels in 1993, then the Reds for two seasons before brief stops with Atlanta, Baltimore and finally Tampa Bay in 1998.

Yet the magic of his 30-game hitting streak is forever worth remembering.
